The International Olympic Committee (IOC) declared on Sunday that Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosa will receive the bronze medal that American gymnast Jordan Chiles won in the floor exercise at the Paris Games.

It follows a finding on Saturday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) stating that the USA filed its initial query regarding Chiles' score in Monday's gymnastics floor exercise final after the allotted one-minute time limit had passed.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) announced that Bărbosu's position would be raised to third with a score of 13.700 and that Chiles' initial score of 13.666 would be reinstated.

Furthermore, the IOC affirmed that Chiles will lose her bronze and receive Bărbosu's place as a result of the score adjustment.

"The IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu (Romania) following the CAS decision with regard to the Women's Artistic Gymnastics Floor Exercise Final and the amendment of the ranking by the International Gymnastics Federation," the IOC stated in a statement.

"We are in contact with USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal and with the Romanian NOC to discuss the reallocation ceremony."

On Sunday, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee declared that it will file an appeal against the ruling.

According to the statement, "We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG)'s initial scoring and the CAS appeal process that need to be addressed."

"The first mistake was in FIG's scoring, and the second was during the CAS appeal procedure when the USOPC wasn't given enough time or notice to properly contest the ruling. Consequently, we did not have adequate representation or the chance to make a thorough presentation of our case.

In light of these facts, we are dedicated to pursuing an appeal in order to assist Jordan Chiles in getting the credit she merits. We are committed to helping her succeed as an Olympian, and we'll keep working hard to find a quick and equitable solution to this problem.

USA Gymnastics cited their statement on Saturday, in which it expressed its "devastation" over the decision.
On Monday, the battle came to a thrilling close. Bărbosu believed she had won the bronze medal when the competition concluded on Monday with Chiles' routine, scoring 13.700.

After successfully challenging the difficulty score, Chiles' score increased to 13.666 from 13.666, placing her third behind American Simone Biles and gold medallist Rebeca Andrade.

One of the most famous pictures of the Olympics was taken when the Americans bowed down to Andrade on the first all-Black gymnastics podium.

Chiles' medal was called into question, nonetheless, when CAS ruled that the investigation Chiles filed "was raised after the conclusion of the one-minute deadline" stated in the regulations.

Following the CAS verdict, Chiles said, "I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you," on her Instagram story along with four broken hearts emojis.
